Fridge Fumble

Rise and Shine. A doorbell camera in Tallmadge, Ohio, hilariously captured the moment a $4,200 LG fridge became a return before it even reached the front door. Chad Jones watched as delivery workers fumbled the drop-off, turning the scene into an unexpected comedy show. “Luckily, we kept our old fridge,” Jones laughed, recalling how the workers claimed the damage was from the manufacturer, completely unaware their mishap—and their impromptu dance moves—were caught on video. Despite the fridge fiasco, Jones decided to cut the already flustered worker some slack. Now, he’s waiting for a replacement, hoping the next delivery is less eventful.

Apple Intelligence Unveils the Future of AI

Apple

Apple just made a huge splash at WWDC 2024, unveiling it’s shiny new AI system: Apple Intelligence.

Tim Cook took the stage to introduce this game-changer, calling it "the new personal intelligence system that makes your most personal products even more useful and delightful." Translation: your iPhone, iPad, and Mac are about to get a whole lot smarter. Imagine having an AI that can prioritize your notifications, rewrite your texts, and even create personalized images. Yep, Apple is taking the AI wars to a whole new level.

Craig Federighi, Apple's software engineering guru, showed off how Apple Intelligence can leverage your personal context to handle tasks effortlessly. Picture this: you’re juggling a busy schedule, and your AI can piece together your meetings, traffic updates, and personal messages to ensure you make it to your kid's play on time. Siri is getting a major upgrade too. With Apple Intelligence, Siri will now understand corrections, maintain conversational context, and even respond to on-screen content. It’s like having a digital assistant that finally gets you.

Kelsey Peterson, Apple’s machine learning maestro, gave us a glimpse of Siri's newfound powers. Siri can now handle follow-up questions without missing a beat, understand when you fumble your words, and even add addresses directly from your messages to contacts. And if talking to Siri isn’t your thing, you can just type your commands. From organizing notifications to generating custom images, Apple Intelligence is set to revolutionize how you interact with your devices.

Key Features of Apple Intelligence:

Personal Context Awareness: This feature allows Apple Intelligence to understand and utilize personal information across your apps, predicting your needs based on your habits and routines. Whether it's ensuring you don’t miss an important meeting or reminding you of a friend's birthday, it’s almost like your AI knows you better than you know yourself.

Super Siri:

  • Conversational pro that remembers context.

  • Corrects itself when you misspeak.

  • Handles on-screen tasks seamlessly.

Smart Notifications: Only alerts you about the important stuff.

Text Magic: Rewrites, proofreads, and summarizes across your apps.

Image Guru: Crafts personalized images in sketch, illustration, or animation styles.

Contextual Task Master: Manages your schedule with traffic predictions and personal reminders.

Type to Siri: Prefer typing? Double-tap and type away.

iPhone Guide: Asks Siri about settings or features without needing to know the exact names.

So, get ready for a smarter, more intuitive Apple experience. Your devices are about to become your new digital best friends.

Amazon's $230M Generative AI Boost

CNBC

Amazon is dropping a hefty $230 million to back startups in the generative AI game. With around $80 million earmarked for its second AWS Generative AI Accelerator program, Amazon is making a bold move to make AWS the go-to cloud for AI innovators. Most of this funding, packed into AWS compute credits, means startups get exclusive AWS support. This year’s lucky cohort will also get the VIP treatment with access to Nvidia experts and the Nvidia Inception program, connecting them with extra consulting and investors.

Last year’s Accelerator program supported 21 startups with up to $300,000 each in AWS credits, totaling around $6.3 million. This year, the stakes are much higher. Matt Wood, VP of AI products at AWS, said, “We will help startups launch and scale world-class businesses, providing the building blocks they need to unleash new AI applications that will impact all facets of how the world learns, connects, and does business.”

Amazon's spending spree in AI is part of its strategy to close the gap with rivals in the red-hot AI race. Despite its claims of progress, Amazon has hit a few bumps, like the delayed Bedrock AI launch and troubles within its Alexa division. Add to that some missed investment opportunities and regulatory scrutiny, and it’s clear Amazon has a lot riding on this. As they double down on AI, everyone’s watching to see if these moves will make a splash or just ripple in the tech pond.

Musk Vows to Ban iPhones Over OpenAI

Neon Bees

Elon Musk is stirring the pot again, this time threatening to ban iPhones from all his companies over Apple’s new OpenAI integrations. In a series of posts on X, Musk claimed that if Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, Apple devices would be banned from his businesses and stored in Faraday cages. He argues that OpenAI’s involvement poses a privacy risk, despite Apple and OpenAI assuring users that they must approve each data request before it’s shared with ChatGPT.

Apple’s big WWDC 2024 reveal included new features allowing Siri to tap into ChatGPT for certain queries, with user permission required each time. This integration aims to make life easier by offering ChatGPT responses directly within Siri, no app required. Apple also announced ChatGPT support in writing tools across iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, letting users draft documents and generate images using AI. Apple emphasized that these interactions are secure and only logged if users opt to connect their ChatGPT accounts.

Musk’s objections underscore his broader concerns about privacy and third-party data handling. He insists these integrations should remain standalone apps to ensure privacy. Despite Apple’s reassurances and the optional nature of data sharing, Musk’s vocal criticisms are sure to ignite further debate on AI integrations and user privacy. As Apple moves forward with its plans, users will have to decide if these new features enhance their experience or if they’re a potential risk to their data security.

Mistral AI Secures $640M for AI Expansion

Neon Bees

Mistral AI just bagged a whopping $640 million in its Series B funding round, led by General Catalyst. With this latest cash infusion, the startup now boasts a $6 billion valuation. This fresh capital injection follows their impressive $113 million seed round last year, positioning Mistral AI as a serious contender against AI heavyweights like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Co-founded by former Meta and DeepMind experts, Mistral AI is on a mission to create top-tier AI models. They’ve rolled out both open-source models, like Mistral 7B and Mistral 8x22B, and proprietary ones like Mistral Large, designed for API-based usage. Their latest offering, Codestral, a generative AI model for code, has a restrictive license to keep its outputs from commercial use. Plus, their chat assistant, Le Chat, is currently free to use.

CEO Arthur Mensch is pumped about the investment, saying it keeps Mistral AI’s growth and independence intact. The round saw big names like Lightspeed Venture Partners, Nvidia, and Salesforce Ventures hop on board. With strategic partnerships, including a collaboration with Microsoft Azure, Mistral AI is set to push the AI envelope and attract corporate clients to turn their cutting-edge tech into cash cows.
